The department of applied mathematics serves as a national center for research in atmospheric sciences. Among the areas of focus are numerical weather prediction, statistical forecast, nowcast methods, and dynamic meteorological modelling on the troposphere scale. These are complemented by a rich experience in planning and analyzing field campaigns.
Extensive and sophisticated field campaigns are conducted in a variety of scenarios ranging from large open and urban areas, down to small confined spaces with the following objectives:
Focusing on meteorological modeling, the department has developed statistical methods for forecasting surface winds, both temporally and spatially (e.g. analogue, spatial distribution, spectral and vector interpolation-based) with a special focus on urban and complex terrain areas.
